Maximizing AI tool effectiveness
Your developers are likely already using AI tools, but the most effective tools have evolved, and there are newer approaches. Part of the difference involves taking a leap of faith that anything can be fully coded. In the end it’s not subjective. Following best practices, any coding task can be completed with quality, secure code.
Once we try it together with a few different programming tasks and see success, the productivity increase becomes quickly self-reinforcing. Some team members will take to it more quickly than others, but that’s fine.
What’s the ROI timeline?
You’ll start seeing improved coding results in one to two weeks, with one week being entirely realistic if you prioritize it, and I can get time with both management and engineers to do this properly. Keep in mind that once developers start working at this new speed, other parts of your pipeline (such as product managers) will need to be streamlined using AI to keep up.
Key is having at least one developer on the team who is willing to truly give the new approach a shot (with guard rails in place).
Before I start, make sure we are pre-approved to pay for the AI tools needed.
For more ROI specifics: My consulting fee is minimal in the big picture, and ongoing monthly costs for coding assistants range from $20 to $200 per developer. While it’s early days for precise percentages, your development team will become more than 10x more efficient. Not just in speed, but in quality and security too. Plus, your developers will be able to work with languages and technologies they couldn’t touch before.
Ideally, one person on the team becomes the AI champion, and I meet with them weekly as needed to help with any issues they encounter.
What transformation covers
I start with an assessment of your team’s current workflow and identify the quickest wins. Then I run hands-on sessions where we tackle real tasks from your backlog using AI tools, not theoretical exercises. Your developers see immediate results with their actual work.
I provide customized playbooks for your specific tech stack and codebase. These aren’t generic guides but documentation tailored to how your team operates. I also set up peer review processes specifically designed for AI-generated code, ensuring quality remains high as speed increases. Throughout the engagement, I’m available for troubleshooting and course correction. When your team hits a roadblock, I help them push through it. The goal is sustainable transformation, not just a temporary boost.
Will AI replace developers?
If your goal is just to maintain your current feature delivery rate with a smaller team, you’re thinking about this wrong. You won’t beat your competitors that way. The real power of AI is delivering at 10x speed with your existing team.
Reducing staff means losing institutional knowledge and the ability to spot problems specific to your organization. Keep your team the same size and completely outpace the competition by delivering astronomically faster. Success comes from speed of delivery combined with quality and security, not from cutting corners on people.
How to measure success?
Simple discussions with the engineering team and the manager of the engineering team, after a few weeks of using the new methods, should make it very clear what has improved.
But if you want metrics, and you’re using Jira, each ticket should already have complexity sizing (story points or similar). Track how many tickets each team member closes per week and month.
I’ve made many a JIRA dashboard that shows information like this, and I’m happy do that for you if there isn’t already someone who that can quickly do that.
